Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro has restored the fifth Firefighter to the 10 engine companies that lost the added staffing even before seeing whether a jump in the absence rate that triggered the penalty had been corrected, according to the FDNY.
The reduction was made in early December, as required under the union contract that mandates the rollback anytime the Firefighter absentee rate exceeds 7.5 percent. In November the sick rate hit 7.53 percent.
