The head of the union representing more than 1,100 officers with several state agencies, including the New York State University Police, has called Governor Kathy Hochul’s veto of a bill that would establish a 20-year retirement plan “tyrannical.”
The legislation would reduce the retirement baseline for SUNY officers, regional State Park Police, Department of Environmental Conservation officers and forest rangers from 25 years. It would bring the special officers in line with State Troopers and about 97 percent of municipal police officers, according to the bill’s sponsors. The legislation's proponents and the officers’ union have argued that the provision is necessary to recruit and retain officers.
