Forty-three years ago, on a rainy night in Harlem, three killers waited to ambush police officers who answered a phony call for help at a housing project. When they saw Officers Joseph Piagentini, 28, and Waverly Jones, 33, approach the building, they moved behind the two cops and opened fire.
Officer Jones was shot four times in the back of the head. Officer Piagentini was shot 13 times but did not die right away. His killers continued shooting as the officer pleaded for his life. Both officers were husbands and fathers.
