The financial struggles of Federal employees who hadn’t been paid during the government shutdown entered a new dimension on its 34th day Jan. 24 when U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross wondered why they were going to food banks and setting up Go Fund Me accounts to get by rather than taking loans and using their overdue wages as collateral.
“When you think about it, these are basically government-guaranteed loans, because the government has committed,” he said on CNBC that morning. “These folks will get their back pay once this whole thing gets settled down.”
