Queens development pits unions against local organizers

Skeptics call for more affordable housing on the Astoria site

A massive rezoning proposal in Queens has divided local organizers and city unions, with labor leaders throwing their support behind the project and community organizers in Astoria demanding that the City Council reject the development. The project, called Innovation QNS, would be one of the biggest rezonings in the history of the borough, turning five blocks into 2,845 planned new apartments and more than 250,000 square feet of commercial and community space. 

Leadership of SEIU 32BJ, District Council 9 and Laborers Local 79 held a rally outside of City Hall in support of the project Oct. 19, just hours before a City Council hearing on Innovation QNS was held.
