'Two-tier' mechanic's pay scrapped

Legislation shuts decades-old manufacturer-friendly loophole

Auto manufacturers will no longer be able to unilaterally set pay rates for mechanics repairing cars covered by a warranty, according to legislation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul this week. 

The law, which went into effect immediately, closes a decades-old loophole that union officials said led to a two-tier system by which mechanics fixing cars under warranty would essentially not be paid for some work.
