Retail workers gain protections against violence

Retail workers across the state have more protections against violence in the workplace following Governor Kathy Hochul signing the Retail Worker Safety Act into law earlier this week.

The law, which goes into effect in early March, will require retail establishments with at least 10 workers to provide their employees with de-escalation and violence prevention training and active shooter drills. Businesses must also conduct risk assessments to help mitigate potential violence in the workplace, while employers with 500 workers or more will be required to install panic buttons throughout their stores.
