To the editor:

Two things of particular interest in the Spring 2024 TWU Express, the Transport Workers Union newsletter: "TWU Goes to the Tech Front Line" deals with the union's efforts of protecting workers from management's efforts to introduce new technology.

But one oversight in this article is in the response to proposed self-driving buses. Management uses the analogy of when operators were taken out of elevators. Not mentioned is that elevators don't deal with traffic and pedestrians.

Another article deals with MTA demands for givebacks from Metro-North workers. They include elimination of a vacation day, a personal day, multiple sick days, stopping overtime payments after eight hours, more than doubling of health-care contributions, elimination of paid meal periods and allowing workers' tasks to be assigned to outside contractors.

The MTA is overseen by Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat who touts herself as being from a union family. With friends like her, who needs Republicans?
