Local 983 election stayed after challengers sue

A Manhattan Supreme Court Justice issued a restraining order June 10 barring District Council 37’s Local 983 from conducting its election after five candidates running against the incumbent leadership filed a lawsuit alleging that the election was being run “in gross violation” of the local’s constitution. 

The challengers alleged that in-person, telephone and electronic voting, all prescribed for this election, violated the local’s constitution, which states that “members must be present to vote.”
