Kenneth Wynder, whose aggressive tactics as head of the Law Enforcement Employees Benevolent Association have produced impressive contract breakthroughs and won over new members even as he alienated some fellow union leaders, is trying to expand his reach by running for the 22nd District Queens City Council seat.
His announcement, made during a union dinner April 15 at a catering hall in the heart of the district in Astoria, was particularly surprising because he is challenging an incumbent who is in his first term and therefore eligible to seek re-election, Costa Constantinides. Asked afterward what prompted him to run now rather than in the 2021 election, when the city’s Term Limits Law would require the incumbent to give up his seat, Mr. Wynder replied, “I’m not gonna give him a free pass for four years.”
