Feds order NYC Transit to boost safety for subway workers

Agency’s president forcefully contests findings

Citing an increased number of incidents coupled to poor safety practices in the city subway system, federal transportation authorities have directed the state’s Public Transportation Safety Board, the MTA and New York City Transit to take immediate steps to address the shortcomings or risk losing funding.

In directives issued last week, the Federal Transit Administration ordered the agencies to take stock of its safety protocols, institute corrective action plans and take other steps to mitigate the possibility of incidents, noting “a substantial risk of death or personal injury.”
