To the Editor: If ever there were a moment in history that confirmed the danger and folly of the GOP's belief in small government and unregulated businesses, it is now. The Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 should have made that clear to everyone.
Our President thought it a good idea, in the interest of reducing the size of our "bloated" bureaucracy, to eliminate the pandemic response unit within the National Security Council (NSC) and cut funding in national health departments during his time in office. For months, he hesitated to direct manufacturers to increase production of test kits and medical personal protective equipment (PPE), presumably out of a resistance to regulate business. As a result of this small government/big business mentality we find ourselves where we are; a nation under siege.
