Crude and Crass Trump A Rich Man's Sharpton

A bit more than 20 years ago, when President Clinton briefly wavered on his 1992 campaign promise to “end welfare as we know it,” Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan shrugged off that original pledge as “boob bait for the Bubbas.”

He was alluding to the Man From Hope’s appealing to his Southern, good-ole-boy base to reverse a string of three straight Democratic presidential defeats, and the reality that beginning with Richard Nixon’s victory in the 1968 election using a “Southern strategy” of playing to discontent in that region with the Federal response under President Johnson to the civil-rights movement, the GOP nominee had captured five of the previous six elections. The one exception featured both another Democratic Governor from the South, Jimmy Carter, and the continuing fallout from the Watergate scandal.
