Among the relationships that are most important for New York City Mayors, the one with the NYPD, particularly its rank and file, can also be the most-volatile. 

Just ask the incumbent. Since nearly the start of his tenure, Mayor de Blasio’s rapport with cops and their unions has been fraught, pockmarked by mutual distrust that exploded when he went public with his suggestion to his biracial son that he take “special care” during any encounter with police, and later that month two officers were assassinated by a crazed career criminal.
