COVID-19 has taught us many things over the past two years. For some, it pulled back the curtain to reveal who our essential workers are. We've known all along.
Many of them work for nonprofits in the social and human-services sectors. They provide home health care, early-childhood education and outreach to the homeless, among other services. Their work is demanding, sometimes dangerous and the pay is low. Not surprisingly, turnover is very high.
