After a months-long bargaining campaign, the New York State Nurses Association announced that about 20,000 nurses at a dozen private-sector hospitals voted to authorize a strike by a margin of 97 percent, giving their bargaining committees the power to call a strike as their contracts are set to expire on Dec. 31.
The union demands that hospitals prioritize patient care through “enforceable safe staffing,” protect health care services for the vulnerable, improve workplace violence protections, add safeguards on using artificial intelligence in health care and provide “fair wages and benefits” to recruit and retain nurses.
