To the Editor: Anyone else remember when Republicans were telling America that the reason people weren't looking for work during the pandemic was because enhanced unemployment benefits paid people more to stay home?
Even after these benefits ended in many GOP-led states in June of this year, with no change in the labor participation rate, this talking point was still being repeated by Republican leaders across the airwaves in an effort to head off an extension of the policy. However, it came as no surprise to me that when these GOP efforts were successful in ending the enhanced benefits nationwide in September, the employment situation, worsened with some 11 million workers quitting their jobs over the last three months.
