Some have called the Department of Sanitation the most important uniformed workforce in the city. Regardless, it’s easy to make the case that DSNY’s performance, whether good or bad, is evaluated each time a New Yorker takes a walk.
On Monday, during a joint budget hearing of the City Council’s Finance and Sanitation and Solid Waste Management committees, Council members saluted the DSNY’s roughly 10,000 men and women for its recent efforts in getting, and keeping, the city the cleanest in years. They also praised the department’s commissioner, Jessica Tisch, for the innovations she’s brought about since her DSNY tenure began in April 2022.
