The “Boss of the Beach” has turned in his swim trunks and hung up his rescue buoy.
After more than 40 years of stewarding the lifeguard supervisors’ union and 65 years after he first patrolled Manhattan Beach, Peter Stein has retired. The president of Local 508 of District Council 37, Stein has for decades run the union as a personal fiefdom and exerted control over the other lifeguard union, Local 461, handpicking the leadership of both unions.
