Add two more law-enforcement unions to the legal effort to overturn the city’s recently enacted statute prohibiting the use of chokeholds and other restraints.
The State Troopers Police Benevolent Association and the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association jointly filed suit Aug. 19 in State Supreme Court, alleging that the city legislation is superceded by state law and is therefore unconstitutional. The two unions’ suit joins a similar one filed earlier this month by a coalition of law-enforcement unions, including all five representing city police.
