Spike in unionizing petitions swamps Labor Board

Counsel calls for end to ‘captive meetings’

The number of union representation petitions filed at the National Labor Relations Board has jumped 57 percent during the past six months—but the increased workload for the federal agency comes at a time when it is short-staffed.

Between October 2021 and March 31, labor organizations and workers have filed 1,174 petitions seeking a union election, up from 748 during the same period a year earlier, the NLRB announced April 6.

The number of filings alleging unfair labor practice charges—allegations that an employer has violated the National Labor Relations Act—also rose during that period, from 7,255 to 8,254, a 14-percent increase.
