Shootings down, but overall crime spikes

Killings and shootings were down for the first half of the year, but a particularly violent Fourth of July weekend and persistent increases in assaults and other crimes continued to cast a pall on the city’s post-Covid recovery.  

Police officials said that just a few people were responsible for the vast majority of firearms offenses, adding that many shooters, along with perpetrators of property crimes and robberies, were prior offenders. Commissioner Keechant Sewell and other NYPD officials in part blamed the court system contributing to a stubbornly high crime rate by releasing suspects who, as NYPD officials have long claimed, return home, only to commit additional offenses.
