A Rikers Island inmate who punched a mental-health-care intern, breaking her jaw in two places, was sentenced Feb. 25 to an additional three years in prison.
The attack last April by Joseph McRae, 25, on Stephanie Hope Procell drew attention to the danger jail staff members face from the inmates. Most of the news coverage of violence at Rikers deals with correction officers who allegedly beat inmates.
