Calling prison labor “inhumane and unacceptable,” U.S. Senator Cory Booker last week introduced legislation that would classify inmates who work while incarcerated as employees as defined by federal law.
Among other things, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 establishes that most workers must be paid at least the federal minimum wage, currently $7.25, and also establishes overtime pay at time-and-a-half.
