Mayor, union back Hochul's plan to hire migrants for temp state jobs

Asylum seekers who receive work authorization will be eligible for temporary state jobs under a plan recently approved by Governor Kathy Hochul. 

Last month, the state Civil Service Commission authorized a plan to create seven “transitional” titles that would allow migrants who face barriers to employment — such as the inability to speak or write in English or to verify their educational attainment — to gain work experience. Food-service aide, facilities operations aide and service and repair aide are among the titles that will be created.
