So far this year, there have been over 300 mass shootings (3 or more victims) in our nation, so we are likely to have had more than 500 mass shootings by the end of the year.
Ninety-eight percent of the approximately 400 million guns (legally owned) in the United states are in the hands of civilians. Twenty million of these guns assault rifles, i.e., weapons of war including AR-15s and AK-47s. Only 2 percent are in the hands of the military or police departments.
