Citing the possibility of an appearance of conflict, state Attorney General Letitia James has recused her office from the investigation into the death of Robert Brooks, the prisoner who died following a brutal beating by correctional officers last month.
Four of the 13 officers involved in the incident are defendants in other matters and represented by lawyers from her office, James said. Her office has appointed Onondaga County’s district attorney, William J. Fitzpatrick, as a special prosecutor in the case.
