Budget cuts imposed by the Adams administration are completely unnecessary — that was the resounding message members of the City Council, union leaders and community advocates sent during and ahead of an occasionally contentious meeting of the Council’s Finance Committee hearing Monday.
Members of the Council, as well as union leaders, citing the various services and initiatives which have been diminished by the cuts, argued that the city is balancing its budget on the backs of New Yorkers. Council Member Sandy Nurse highlighted the city’s plan to eliminate funding for community composting programs, which will result in about 100 workers losing their jobs.
