Although state legislators passed the mayoral control bill on June 3, Hochul did not approve the extension until just hours before mayoral control was set to expire. If mayoral control had lapsed, oversight of schools would revert to the previous controversial system of 32 community school boards and the citywide Board of Education. Mayoral control was established by the state in 2002.
