Federal Workers to Finally Be Paid As Trump Puts Shutdown on Hold

Thirty-five days into the Federal shutdown, President Trump blinked Jan. 25 by agreeing to reopen the government through Feb. 15, allowing 800,000 employees who were due to miss their second paycheck that day to get some relief while talks continued between his administration and both houses of Congress.

Mr. Trump’s decision to relent without having secured $5.7 billion he had demanded to build a wall along the southern border with Mexico came at a time when polls showed more than 70 percent of Americans believed that objective was not an appropriate one to justify shutting down government operations, and his own approval rating had dipped to 34 percent, as he was assigned most of the blame by voters.
