The Department of Education is forever doubling down on its professed advocacy for schoolchildren, especially when its idealism is belied by actual policies that contradict it. They fervently tout zero tolerance of any threat to the welfare of our kids, but its rules for bus service eligibility take chances with kids’ lives. Indifference to their safety is not by design, but neither has its correction taken precedence over the status quo.
Were it not for the preemption by school crossing guards and sometimes the interception of other under-recognized workers, there would be more grief to bear because of irrational and sometimes callous rules and regulations.
