EMS unions: ‘Fix our pay issues or we’re going to keep suing you’

FDNY EMTs, paramedics and EMS officers are not being properly compensated for some of their work, and unions representing the FDNY employees will continue to sue the department and the city until the issue is resolved, the presidents of two unions representing FDNY EMS workers told The Chief this week.  

Just two weeks ago, EMTs and paramedics represented by Local 2507 of District Council 37 had an $18 million payout arising from a 2013 lawsuit affirmed by an appeals court. That suit contended the FDNY had violated the Fair Labor Standards Act when it failed to properly compensate its EMS employees for work required both prior to the start of their scheduled eight-hour shifts and after.
