Employers who steal their workers' wages or are otherwise found to violate labor law could find their ability to do business severely curtailed, according to legislation introduced in the state legislature this week.
The “Wage Theft Deterrence Package,” a set of three bills introduced by State Senator Jessica Ramos Wednesday, would empower state authorities to strip businesses of their liquor licenses, issue stop-work orders or suspend businesses' ability to collect sales tax, effectively shutting them down, if they violate certain portions of state labor law, including those governing pay and hours.
