From all appearances, it was just another change of tours at Engine 24/Ladder 5 on West Houston St. in Lower Manhattan the night of May 22. There was no brass band and no balloons. And yet it was the scene of a momentous occasion. This was the place that Battalion Chief John Dunne, 65, the FDNY’s third-most-senior member, chose to spend his last day on the job.
He brought enough steak, potatoes and broccoli to feed the entire night tour and then some.
