NYPD officials were put to the test by City Council Members and advocates regarding the department’s collection and preservation of tens of thousands of DNA samples.
During occasionally testy exchanges between department officials and Council Members, NYPD officials were repeatedly placed on the defensive, but insisted that the NYPD’s collection of roughly 32,000 samples tied to people either convicted or suspected of wrongdoing was lawful and an indispensable and “objective” investigative device.
