Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy, who earlier this month achieved a major breakthrough for his rank and file when Governor Cuomo signed into law a bill giving Firefighters hired after 2009 the same disability-pension benefit as more-senior colleagues, is leaving that job to become Executive Director of the Fire Pension Fund, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro announced Sept. 17.
James Slevin, who has been Mr. Cassidy’s vice president for the past 14-plus years, will serve as president for the remainder of his term, which runs through April 30, 2017. It is not known whether Mr. Slevin, who was recently elected a regional vice president of the International Association of Firefighters, will seek a full term during UFA elections scheduled to be held next March.
