AFSCME Head Calls on Feds To Provide State, Local Stimulus Aid

Couching their demand as both necessary to reanimate a stagnant economy and morally imperative in a time of crisis, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees President Lee Saunders joined with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer April 28 to call on Congress to pass a $700-billion aid package for states and localities.

They described their appeal as one with bipartisan support, certainly among Mayors and Governors, and chastised Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, for saying in late April that he would “favor” allowing states to go bankrupt rather than approve such aid.
