3 ex-Rikers COs plead guilty to faking sick time for over a year

Former jail guards could face 10 years

Posted 3/17/23

Three former Rikers Island correction officers who collected paychecks while feigning illness or injury to stay off the job while the island penal compound plunged into chaos have pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges.

Monica Coaxum, who partied in the Dominican Republic and Florida while collecting $80,000 during the 14 months she faked injury from a fall; her fiancé, Eduardo Trinidad, who claimed sham trauma, also from a fall, but joined her the dance floor and went bowling while banking $119,000 during a 16-month period; and Steven Cange, who had alleged debilitating vertigo and other side effects from a Covid jab but parlayed the DOC’s unlimited sick-leave policy for about 20 months to pursue a career as a cartoon artist while he drew $139,000 in salary, all face a maximum of 10 years in prison when they are sentenced.
