The U.S. Justice Department has launched an investigation into whether the Mount Vernon Police Department has engaging in a pattern or practice of discriminatory policing, with an eye on its use of force, how officers conduct strip and body-cavity searches, and the handling of evidence.
The probe was announced Dec. 3 by Damian Williams, who just a few weeks earlier was sworn in as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District, and Kristen Clarke, the Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.
