Two NYPD Veterans Differ on Impact Of Convictions of 'Bystander Cops'

Two former NYPD officials with legal backgrounds had conflicting views on how the Feb. 24 convictions of three ex-Minneapolis police officers who failed to intervene to prevent the murder of George Floyd by one of their colleagues nearly two years ago would affect cops' reactions here in similar circumstances.

Arnold Kriss, a former NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Trials during Mayor Ed Koch's tenure, said it would be "an object lesson" to city cops that "they have to act on their training and their ethical and moral beliefs," even if that meant antagonizing a fellow officer whose actions were putting someone's life at risk.
