Suffolk Cooperation With Union Pays Off in Crisis

The Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees has agreed to a six-month deferral of longevity benefits that its members were scheduled to receive in April after County Executive Steve Bellone agreed to cover its members' salaries and health benefits without tapping into their leave banks if they contract the coronavirus.

The county, like much of the downstate area, has been hard-hit by COVID-19, absorbing 1,300 deaths through May 6, including Sands Point Police Sgt. Joseph Spinoza.
