After President Trump announced Jan. 10 that he would present New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick with the Presidential Medal of Freedom four days later, a New York Post story characterized it as "a bid to restore a sense of normalcy to the White House."
"Normalcy" will have to wait: the following day the man who coached the Patriots to a record six Super Bowl titles, and was defensive coordinator of the New York Giants when they won a pair of them, announced he was declining the award because of the "tragic events of last week."
