For the second time, Governor Cuomo has vetoed a bill to restore a provision eliminated in 2012 that protected the wages, pensions and vacation time of school bus drivers.
Advocates including Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181, which represents about 8,000 school bus drivers and matrons, have pushed for the Employee Protection Provision to be reinstated, which was proposed in a bill sponsored by State Sen. Robert Jackson. The protections guaranteed school bus workers’ seniority rights and compensation levels when a route was taken over by a new company.
