Contentious Law Shielding Police Records Repealed

Against the backdrop of massive protests in New York and nationwide against the killing of George Floyd and other black persons at the hands of police, state legislators June 9 repealed a law that denied access to officers’ disciplinary records.Three days later, Governor Cuomo approved the change. 

Concerted efforts by police and other unions representing uniformed officers kept similar legislation to repeal or even reform Section 50-a of the state Civil Rights Law from even coming to floor votes in recent years, but the events of the last few weeks proved too much to overcome. The bill easily passed first the Senate and then the Assembly on the same day as Mr. Floyd’s funeral.
