Budget Deficit Or Not, Teacher Unions Prod State: Pay Up on School Funding

With a potential $6.1 billion state budget deficit looming, Teachers’ union officials and education advocates at a Dec. 3 Senate hearing pushed for the state to finally fulfill a court mandate issued more than a decade ago to fully fund public schools.

“If I’m a Teacher in a classroom and I have four different languages being spoken and six kids in my classroom who are also homeless, how the hell do you expect me to do my job and meet the needs of those children if you’re not fully funding my school properly?” United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew asked during the seven-hour long marathon.
