Marking an end to a rocky, nearly four-year tenure at the helm of the city Correction Department, Cynthia Brann announced May 11 that she will leave the agency at the end of the month.
Ms. Brann, a veteran of nearly 40 years in law enforcement, has led the jail system during a period of momentous change, including planning for the eventual closure of Rikers Island, and the department's curtailed use of solitary confinement. She also managed its largely effective response to the coronavirus crisis, and oversaw a massive reduction in the inmate population as the pandemic threatened to overtake the jail system.
