The state Department of Transportation is accepting applications through the end of the year for Highway Maintenance Workers and Highway Maintenance Worker Trainees for permanent assignments in several counties. The annual pay range is $38,384 to $42,895. Depending on the location, some posts have additional pay adjustments. 

Positions are available throughout the state, including in Orange, Rockland and Westchester counties. 

The Jobs

Highway Workers and Worker Trainees must be able to respond to emergency call-outs within one hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions, to be considered for this position.

Incumbents perform routine manual tasks requiring medium-to-heavy physical effort involving exposure to all kinds of weather conditions. They will be expected to operate plows during winter operations and to obtain the required equipment certifications.

Other responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the DOT’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.


Highway Maintenance Worker Trainees 2 must be 18 years old and possess a Class A or B commercial driver license with no air-brake restriction. 

Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to satisfactorily operate a  state DOT large dump-truck within two weeks of appointment. 

Highway Maintenance Workers 1 must have satisfactorily completed the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or have one year of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes. 

They also must have a Class A or B commercial driver license with DOT-specified endorsements, and two NYSDOT equipment-operation certifications in addition to three specific certifications: heavy dump truck, one-person plowing with single or double wing, and front-end loader.

Within the first two weeks of employment, applicants must satisfactorily complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification.

All candidates must pass pre-employment physical and medical examinations and a drug test prior to starting employment. Some positions may require additional credentials or background checks.
