To the editor:

The headline for the May 17th Chief article, "Man who tried to kill NYPD officers gets 27 years," says it all about the insanity of our alleged justice system. You can try to stab to death three cops and still get out of prison 27 years later. The president of the Police Benevolent Association, Patrick Hendry, is right that would-be killer Trevor Bickford should be imprisoned for the rest of his life. That's a no-brainer.

Just as it's a no-brainer that in a city with a budget of over $100 billion, $60 million should not be cut from the libraries ("Cuts could trim libraries Saturday service," May 10th Chief).

Just as it's a no-brainer that nobody should lose their job or have their life threatened for their views on the Israel-Hamas war, whatever their positions on it are. ("Educators say they were forced out for pro-Palestinian views," May 10th Chief).

Educators James Parra and Siriana Abboud must have forgotten The Clash’s counsel: "You have the right to free speech/As long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it."

Richard Warren
