In a move that escalated tensions between Mayor Zohran Mamdani and union leaders, the mayor recently expressed support for a plan to share city employees’ healthcare data with insurers, compromising workers’ privacy in exchange for projected cost savings.
Mamdani's position reflects his hopes to reduce city expenses as he confronts a multibillion-dollar budget deficit. The projected $100 million in annual savings secured by the data-sharing plan would help address a gap exceeding $5 billion.
