A former NYPD sergeant was sentenced on April 9 to at least three years in prison after killing a food delivery driver he struck with a cooler during a Bronx drug operation. The sentencing of Erik Duran has drawn fierce criticism from the city's law enforcement unions, who had hoped for no prison time, arguing he was acting in the line of duty.
Sergeants Benevolent Association president Vincent Vallelong condemned the sentencing, calling it "one of the darkest days in the history of our profession."
